BikeRumor just published a really fantastic post in which they interview Dr. Roger Minkow (the inventor of the original Body Geometry saddles back in 1999) about the evolution of the Specialized Romin BG saddle. The Romin, in many ways, is the culmination of everything Dr. Minkow and Specialized have learned about building saddles that improve the rider’s experience.

Believe it or not, the new year is right around the corner. Even though we all have little computer-phones in our pockets, there’s something really nice about a real calender. It’s so much more satisfying to cross days off or flip a whole page than it is to tap a screen or press a button.

There’s really no other way to say it: Bicycle Therapy-Melitta Racing had a great weekend on the cyclocross course. Like, a really great weekend. Between Saturday and Sunday at the Long Island Super Cross Cup and Kutztown Cross, the team won six races, took two second place finishes, and multiple top-tens. Not too shabby.

Linda Mattioni beat the women’s 3/4 field both days, and Nathalie Anderson finished twice in the top ten.

Mikey Green won the men’s 2/3/4 race on Sunday and Brendan McGrath took second place both days.

Meanwhile in Kutztown…

Gerry Adasavage, Dan Langlois, and Jack Drummond won the Men’s Elite, Masters 35+, and 3/4 race respectively.

2012 is shaping up to be quite the year for Specialized. The Venge was introduced on a Wednesday this past spring and was promptly ridden to victory at Milan-San Remo, the Amira got a complete redesign to make the best women’s race bike even better, and now we’ve got the 2012 Tarmac SL4.

The Tarmac has won the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia, the Tour of Flanders, and hundreds of other races since it’s debut half a dozen years ago. We brought LOOK Cycles into the shop for the 2011 model year and the reception has been fantastic. There’s something almost indescribable about how a LOOK bike feels that separates it from the pack. They’re smooth, light, lively, quick, and they just make you want to keep riding.

There are no two items more important to carry on a ride than food and water.  However, if you believe that preparation goes beyond survival we might suggest packing a pump and a tube, even if you are not skilled in flat tire repair it does not hurt to carry.  Plenty of cyclists pride themselves on excellent etiquette and will slow their pace to check on a distressed rider on the side of the road.  Having the correct inner tube and an inflation device can save you a long walk home in some very uncomfortable shoes.  With that said we would like to make the following suggestions, you can call them the essentials:

• Specialized Air Tool Mini ($25) – This compact* offering from Specialized fits neatly into a jersey pocket, saddle bag, orcan be clamped next a water bottle cage.  Available in two models for road and mountain bikes the sturdy aluminum pump is as reliable as it is sleek.

• Inner Tube ($7-10) – Patch kits are great, but can mean a lot of extra time spent off the bike in the middle of a ride.  Fresh inner tubes don’t have an expiration date, so pack one under the seat and forget about it until it’s needed.

*Mechanic’s Tip:  Small pumps are great because they’re light weight and pack away easily, but the short barrel does not provide much air per stroke.  It is not uncommon to find oneself pumping up a flat tire for five or ten minutes.  Not only is this an exhausting task, but as one becomes fatigued (and often frustrated) they will lose some grip on the pump head and tear the fragile Presta valve.  This slip quickly negates all of your hard work, but it is simple to avoid.  After locking the pump onto the valve place the back of the head against the corner of a curb.  Now you can pump down, into the curb and the pressure with keep the whole assembly stable.
